A mechanic’s or storage lien (MSL) is a way for automotive repair and body shops, vehicle parking and storage facilities (including self-storage facilities), and towing services to recover the costs of service from their non-paying customers.
Yes, as long as the vehicle was not sold to a third party at the required public auction.
ClarifyDMV can help you get a MSL lien or title. Start by clicking the “Register or Sign In” button in the top right-hand corner.
ClarifyDMV is a third-party administrator of documentation and fees for processing MSL liens and titles. We handle everything behind the scenes and post status updates on the customer portal.
At the moment, we only provide service in Virginia.
There is a flat fee of $269 for each vehicle for which you are applying for a MSL lien or title, from start to finish (which in most cases means title in hand).
The flat fee above includes any and all DMV fees required to process a MSL lien or title. As of August 2022, total related fees exceeded $60.
We currently accept payments through Stripe.
As our Terms and Conditions state, we do not process refunds, but if you decide to obtain a MSL lien or title elsewhere, you can request a credit to be applied to a future vehicle.
It may take up to 60 days or more before you see the title, though it is possible that you may receive it earlier (provided the vehicle has not been sold to a third party during the required public auction stage). The length of time is largely the result of Virginia law and cannot be expedited.
